St Giles Hospice fundraising hits the £2,500 mark

As a family-run business, we are passionate about supporting the local community wherever we can. Giving back to the community that has helped us sustain a successful business for over a quarter of a century is of great importance to us.

We do this in a number of ways, including raising money for charity and working with local schools to inspire young people.

For several years, Clean Giant has supported the St Giles Hospice as one of its chosen charities and we are delighted to have just hit the £2,500 mark in donations for this very worthwhile cause.

We initially partnered up with St Giles because we wanted to offer consistent support to a charity that we know makes a real and tangible difference in the area. We have personally relied on St Giles for a family member and we know first-hand just how important their work is.

We decided to donate £5 to St Giles Hospice for every carpet or upholstery cleaning job booked online via our website. This initiative has been very successful and is still in place today.

Let us introduce you to the newest carpet cleaning member on board, George.  George will be working alongside me for a while, learning the ropes, on his apprenticeship (of sorts).  I say that because George is no stranger to cleaning carpets.  In a way, George has been with us on Clean Giant carpet cleaning journey since we began trading in 1991.  How so?  Because he’s my son!

A Bit About George

George firstly went in his own direction in order to develop his individual skills and has been working as a deputy manager for Ladbrokes for the last twelve years.

Similarly to me, George has a real love of football and is an ardent West Bromwich Albion fan.  He actually loves most sports (except for motor racing, which he hates) and has a particular interest in horse racing that tied in nicely with his previous job.

George also enjoys playing snooker and when he was just fourteen years old he won an under 16’s national competition, his claim to fame being that he beat, former world number one, Judd Trump in the semi-final!

He still loves to play snooker but competitions against Judd are now a thing of the past.

Nowadays, George is a family man.  He is married to the lovely Kerrie and they have two amazing children, Alfie and Florence who are now four and six years old.  The children were actually born on exactly the same day, two years apart – what are the odds on that?

Growing Together

I am thrilled to have George on board and will thoroughly enjoy the time that we will be cleaning carpets together whilst he picks up any of my carpet cleaning secrets that he doesn’t already know.

St Giles Hospice is one of the most respected charities in the region.  They started off in the former vicarage of St Giles Church in Whittington (between Lichfield and Tamworth) in 1983 when there was concern about the level of care offered to terminally ill patients in local hospitals.

Since then the charity has grown and they now have over 400 staff and more than 1,500 regular volunteers.  With their 31 charity shops and many fundraising activities their fundraising efforts are incredible.  They are now able to spend over £9million each year providing high quality medical and nursing care for people living with cancer and other serious illnesses.

Care is provided in people’s own homes across the West Midlands as well as in three specialist centres in Whittington, Sutton Coldfield and Walsall.

Their help is not limited to the patients but extends to the patients families and helpers with St Giles Hospice offering guidance and support, including coping with bereavement.

How Clean Giant Help

We feel that by partnering with St Giles Hospice we are able to offer consistent support to a charity that we know makes a difference.

We made the decision that for every carpet or upholstery cleaning job gained via our website we would donate £5 to charity.  We are now into our twelfth year of this arrangement, with 2016 being particularly successful.

Add a Bit of Humour

Another way that I personally have been able to support St Giles Hospice is to speak at some of their events.  They regularly host talks at various locations and I relate a mixture of nostalgia, true stories, and amusing anecdotes.  I have been doing this for four years now.  My largest audience was made up of 292 people and my smallest just eleven!  I donate my fee to St Giles Hospice and in this way I have been able to raise over £2,000.

St Giles Hospice are always looking for new and interesting ways to raise funds.  This year will be the tenth anniversary of their annual Solstice Walk in Lichfield which starts with a sunset party and is a lot of fun.

Over the years Clean Giant has provided various promotional materials to tie in with this walk including notepads, pens and spot remover.  Every bit helps.

We feel that, within reason, whatever you give away you get back by the bucketful.  That’s definitely been our experience in helping St Giles Hospice.  Maybe you feel moved to join in too?
